Jesus,
the Author
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the
author
and perfecter of our faith.”
Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)
We have looked at Jesus, the Son; Jesus, the Intercessor; Jesus, the Shepherd; Jesus, the Friend; and Jesus, the Teacher; now as we complete this mini-series, we look at Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith (KJV). The Greek word archēgŏs [ar-khay-gosʹ] used here for author means a chief leader, not just a leader but the leader of leaders. In the KJV the word author is first used in Hebrews 5:9: “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all that obey him.” In this instance the Greek word is aitiŏs [ahʹ-ee-tee-os], and it implies the cause or source of.
As I pondered upon this, I began to see this beautiful picture of Jesus as the root source or cause enabling us to have a relationship with God, the Father. But more than that, He is also the leader showing us the way to conquer the sin that so easily entangles us, thus ensuring that as we follow His leading, the path He authors, we can be assured that we can persevere and finish the race, knowing that He is the rewarder to those who complete the race.
The writer of Hebrews points to Jesus as the author and perfecter as an introduction to the chapter on God’s discipline in our lives. The Greek word underlying the word discipline is paiděuō [pahee-dyooʹ-o], implying to train or educate a child. Do we need God’s training? Yes, without a doubt. The writer of Hebrews states this: “… God disciplines [educates] us for our good, that we may share in his holiness” (Hebrews 12:10, NIV). It is to help us come ‘closer’ to God so that we may live with Him forever in eternity.
So, how do we persevere through the trials and hardships? We need to deeply consider that these times can be viewed as potential training times and take heart that Jesus’ sufferings on the cross will always far exceed anything that we might go through. If you are struggling, get connected within your local church family and ask them to come alongside you and to support you.
Join with me as we walk side by side with Jesus, knowing him as a friend and as the author of our faith. Let us joyfully receive the prize as we end our race victoriously.
Peace and grace in Christ be with you.
