People's realities of life

As we have come to the end of this mini-series. We are going to look at the realities of people, as the Teacher expresses it. I am sure that as you read through this you will find similarities, and you will also identify with issues that you see and experience around you.

“There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.”

Chapter 7:20

As Christ followers, we should be working hard at trying to reduce the impact of the above statement. At the very least we want that to be said of us less and less. I know that I will never achieve that in my own strength, but O for the grace of Jesus.

The Teacher makes the following observations:

The foolish

·        Spend their time in the house of pleasures.

·        They tend to enjoy listening to their own praise.

·        Bribery and corruption find a home in their hearts.

·        Anger is a strong characteristic trait.

·        Pride is very evident.

·        Fools shout their mouths off without thinking.

·        Fools lack sense, and by their very nature, show their stupidity to everyone.

·        The world tends to esteem fools and appoint them in high positions.

·        They love the sound of their own voice.

·        Their words end up as wicked madness.

·        He is quickly worn down by what he does.

·        The fool tries to do the least amount of work.

The wicked

·        Wicked people seem to live in luxury.

·        Those who are caught in this lifestyle will struggle to break free from it.

·        They lord their status, money, and power over others.

·        Oppression of others is a common trait.

·        Criminality is a way of life, and many times they get away with it.

·        They do not revere God.

·        On earth the wicked seem to enjoy that which the righteous should be enjoying.

The wise

·        Know that death awaits everyone.

·        Will listen to advice and are prepared to accept rebuke.

·        Understand the concept of patience.

·        Are not quickly provoked to anger.

·        Realise that wisdom is to the benefit of all.

·        Know it will go better with God-fearing people, who are reverent before God.

·        Understand that there is a time and place for everything.

·        Believe that God creates opportunities for everyone.

·        The wise know how to give quiet but meaningful words with grace.

What is to be concluded from all of this? People are different: some are young, and some are aged. There are wise people, foolish people and wicked people. Things happen to everybody, regardless of status, wealth and power. We will all die sooner or later.

The Teacher acknowledges the righteous and furthermore acknowledges that ultimately God is in control, whether we like it or not. We see the Teacher expressing that it is good to live a righteous life, to revere and honour God.

Ecclesiastes ends this way:

“Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of man.

For God will bring every deed into judgement,

including every hidden thing whether it is good or evil.”

This is a call to worship God. Life is not meaningless, it is an expression of praise to our Creator, the Almighty God.

Take some time. Reflect on the way you see things. Do you predominantly have a positive or negative outlook? Do you currently have an optimistic or pessimistic viewpoint of life?

I will end with this question: “Given all that is said and done, do you know what is going to happen to you after you die? Does eternal life beckon, or eternal condemnation?”
